Covenant Baptist Church was born in the hearts of a gathering of approximately 175 Christians who earnestly sought God's will in the establishment of a new church in the Lancaster community. A core group of approximately 25 families met in an informal discussion session to determine the level of interest and commitment concerning the creation of a new church. The S.C. Baptist Convention aided in the initial stages of the new church by providing New Work Department consultants to attend these formation meetings.
On Sunday, October 9, 1994, the "New Church" met at the Stevens Auditorium on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Lancaster with Dr. Bert Welch as Pastor — Covenant was born! The official name "Covenant" was adopted on November 10, 1994, as an appropriate name for the new congregation. From that joyful beginning, Covenant Baptist Church has expanded her ministries with the desire to effectively reach the community and the world for Jesus Christ.
